Lunatic. Addict. Attention whore. Maniac. Genius.
All of these words have been used to describe NYC street performer, Matthew Silver. He prefers...wackadoodle.
Here is how Matthew describes himself in his own words on his website:
"My role as a clown, trickster and village idiot is to parody excessive seriousness by playing with taboos, rules, and social norms. My inspiration comes from my heart. I perform for smiles and laughter, loosening people’s armor, and opening up a portal for imagination, creativity and love."
If you aren't familiar with Matthew and his message of "Love Now!" odds are one of his recently gone viral videos will be showing up in your social media feed any day now.
I recently had the great opportunity to spend some time with Matthew while I was in New York and he was kind enough to sit for me. I cannot remember being around another person who I had just met that made me feel as positive about myself and the moment I was in than Matthew did. His energy is infectious and you can't help but feel and act like a goofy little kid around this guy. We laughed. We sang. We made funny noises. We snap danced! What's snap dancing you ask? It's exactly what it sounds like. It's dancing around while snapping your fingers. Brilliant fun!
When we finished our time together, Matthew proclaimed, "We did it together...through the power of love!"
I told him he was awesome and he in return told me I was awesome. But when he said it, I believed it. Because he did too.
I'm sure Matthew expects everyone to interpret his message and his performances differently. My interpretation and takeaway from my time with the Great Wackadoodle is that we are all in this thing together. Same team. Through love, creativity, inspiration, and a lot of silly fun...we can beat back the evil and stand in the light. I choose to stand with Matthew. Who is with me?
***An enormous thank you to my friend Peter Hurley for the use of his studio***
