The art of tattooing can be traced back as far as 5,200 years ago. None of the crew at Black Cobra Tattoos in Sherwood, Arkansas were alive then...clearly. That would be amazing.
Black Cobra is owned by Arkansas native and award winning tattoo artist Matt O'Baugh who happens to also be my neighbor. When he's not cranking out ridiculously awesome artwork in the form of permanent ink masterpieces on people's bodies you might find Matt working on classic cars, feeding the ducks with his son or doing whatever blacksmiths do because he is one. For real.
Matt has won numerous national awards for his tattoos and been featured in quite a few publications as well. Most recently, he was chosen by the readers of the Arkansas Times as the "Best Tattoo Artist in Arkansas."
Now, if you are intimidated by working with the best, you don't have to go far to work with the second best because the runner-up to Matt in the readers choice vote was Katie McGowan who works just a few feet away in the same shop! Talk about a stacked deck!
I had the pleasure of creating portraits of the entire Black Cobra crew today. If you live near Little Rock or Arkansas in general and you need/want tattoo or piercing work done, you are a doofus if you go anywhere but Black Cobra!
For these portraits I used a classic three light setup. Two gridded strip boxes behind the subjects and a Photek Softlighter II directly in front and above. Some simple cinematic color grading using curves in Photoshop and the addition of some gritty texture to the background was the only post done on these.
